Day 8 - Friday 28th November 2008

* …. and on the eighth day, well they didn’t have a blow unfortunately for Graham as he was back on the stand (so to speak) as his grilling continued. He was joined by Mr. Black (caught in the library with the candlestick), yep that’s the fella’ who surprise, surprise spoke in favour of the plans.

Graham though had to finish off with Roger (Opposing QC) first, and he admitted that he had no idea of the repercussions in jobs and finance that would cost the Walton area if the Blues moved to Kirkby, so well played on doing your homework Graham.

He added though that if the Yanks persuade the banks to put the shite in more debt than they already are, and Stanley Park gets the go ahead, that the jobs in the area would be secure in the pub and catering industry. All if, buts and maybes me thinks.

* Graham left Walton now, and moved to the jobs boost Kirkby would expect if the Blues and Tesco got the go ahead. He believed that the ‘natural tendency’ of youngsters to leave Kirkby to find employment would reverse with the Blues and Tesco heading that way, thus bringing stable employment to the area.

* Mr. Black now took to the floor, with his experience as a Chartered Surveyor and expert in Commercial Development. He has a wealth of experience in Large Town Centre Retail Schemes, which is handy as that’s what Destination Kirkby is. He too continued to waffle on reiterating what all the other experts had said. He, like Graham yesterday endeared himself to the good folk of Kirkby by telling them that their town had a ‘tired and dated appearance.’ He carried on with his compliments when he said that the town centre was ‘boxy and inward looking’, and topped it off when he said that the parking situation was of general poor quality’. Now Mr Black you may have made your name on the Cluedo board, but I hope like your other expert witnesses you don’t go for a few scoops down The Falcon tonight.

The Judges Were Glad The Week Was Over

* Now the way to turn Kirkby’s fortunes around is to in Mr. Black’s opinion to build, yes you’ve guessed it a major food store in the area, and this in turn would attract key national chains to the Town.

The four phases of the build would be:

• Blues Stadium / Tesco’s / Car Parking / Demolition of The Old Swimming Pool, even though I learnt to swim there / Upgrade The Bus Station.
• Completion of Retail Units on Cherryfield Drive / New Council Offices
• Hotel and Leisure Facilities / Demolition of Kirkby Suite – Lets Hope they finish the Inquiry of first.
• New Retail Units on The former Asda site / Regeneration of existing Town Centre.

* The bombshell for some local residents is that the Council will have to acquire Compulsory Purchase Orders for some of properties in the area, but hey what’s your house when its progress that matters.

* Our old mate Stephen Sauvain (Representing Liverpool Council) now piped up and asked Mr Black if the commercial viability of the whole project was dependant on the Blues moving to Kirkby. Blacky said he felt improving Kirkby was crucial, and he felt the Stadiums input would do that, but it was not essential to the commercial viability of the project. He added though that it was ‘an all or nothing’ situation.

* So Mr. Black got it today. Roger who got it yesterday wiped the sweat from his brow thankfully watching someone else take the flack. It’s the weekend so all sides went out on a big jolly up to The Carters Arms (allegedly) and the ale flowed freely. Rumour has it they even got a stay back, I said allegedly!!!!!

Roll on Monday, and three points to the Blues hopefully, but funnily enough no one mentioned that.
