CD Everton 2 U. Católica 0

After last weekend’s derby defeat, CD Everton got back on track last night (22/4) with a well-deserved 2:0 home win against U.Católica. Despite the away side’s early dominance, Everton started to take control of the match and on 39m, Álvaro Ormeño broke out of defense and sent a long ball out to Ariel Pereyra whose shot beat U.Católica’s ‘keeper, Cauteruchi, but Cristián Álvarez, in his attempt to clear the danger, could only help the ball into the back of the net. Then a header from Pereyra hit the bar before Francisco Campos scored the second (and his first in an Everton shirt) on 45m from Escalona’s cross. Both sides created chances in the second half but in the end, Everton won the game with some ease.
The victory leaves CD Everton in 8th position with 20 points from 13 games.

Santiago Wanderers 4 CD Everton 0

After two excellent victories, CD Everton came crashing down to earth with a 4:0 away defeat in the local derby against Santiago Wanderers yesterday evening (18 April). The game started off with both teams looking evenly matched but it didn’t take Wanderers too long to show the form that has brought them four successive victories without conceding a goal. Nevertheless, it took the home team 37 minutes to take the lead after a shot from Riveros was deflected off Castañeda, leaving Everton ‘keeper Toro stranded. On 44m Wanderers scored their second through a spectacular long-range effort from Ormeño. CD Everon coach Jorge Socías made changes at half time, bringing on Pizarro and Daniel González, but to no avail. 3 minutes after the restart, Zuñiga scored the third, again with a shot deflected off the unfortunate Castañeda. Everton missed a chance to get back in the match on 54m but Suazo’s penalty was brilliantly saved by Varas. The game was as good as over and despite the Wanderers players taking their foot off the pedal, Everton created very few chances. In the last minute, Franco scored Wanderers’ fourth goal to seal a well-deserved victory.
This defeat leaves Everton in 10th position with 17 points from 10 games.

Next match: Everton – U. Católica (Thursday 22 April, 21:30 local time) (19/04/04)

Everton 5 Temuco 0

In one of the best performances of the season so far, CD Everton swept aside Temuco in the Sausalito Stadium last night (14 April). Everton started the game in confident mood after last week’s away win at U. Concepción but, despite dominating the match, Everton’s first goal (28m) came from an own goal scored by Pedro Santander as Everton took a 1-0 lead into the half-time break. In the second half, goals by Nicolás Diez (47m), two from Ariel Pereyra (54m & 80m) and a brilliant solo effort by Álvaro Villalón (65m), gave a more accurate reflection of Everton’s domination against a poor Temuco side which ended the match with 10 men after Sergio Salas was sent off.
This victory leaves CD Everton in 8th position, with 17 points from 11 matches and it should give the Ruleteros plenty of confidence going into next Sunday’s local derby against current league leaders Santiago Wanderers (k.o. 17:00 local time). (17/04/04)

Universidad de Concepción 2 CD Everton 4

A hat-trick from former U. Concepción striker Héctor Suazo was enough to give CD Everton victory in an entertaining match away to the current league leaders last night.
However, although CD Everton started the match brightly, U. Concepción took the lead on 6 minutes through a spectacular long-range effort from full-back Pedro Rivera. Everton equalised after 14 minutes when Suazo scored from the spot after being fouled in the box by Espínola. 2 minutes later Everton took the lead, again from the penalty spot; Ariel Pereyra was brought down by U. Concepción ‘keeper Carmelo Vega and Víctor González scored his fourth goal of the season. In what was a very open game both teams had chances but Everton’s defence looked shaky at times and it was no surprise when Hugo Droguett was left with just the ‘keeper to beat to score an equaliser for the home team on 22 minutes. The first half ended with little incident but at the break, CD Everton coach, Jorge Socías, decided to make a tactical change and brought on Santiago Pizarro for Víctor González. On 66 minutes, Suazo put Everton ahead, heading home from an Alvaro Ormeño cross. Everton defended the lead well and in injury time, man-of-the-match Suazo completed his hat-trick, from the penalty spot after he himself had been brought down by Hugo Droguett.
This was an important (and extremely encouraging) victory for CD Everton against the league leaders, especially after last week’s home defeat to second-placed Cobreloa. The result leaves Everton with 14 points from 10 games.

Next match: CD Everton – Temuco (Wednesday 14 April k.o. 20:00h) (11/04/04)

Julio Iglesias with a CD Everton shirt (from today's Estrella newspaper); he's giving a concert in Viña del Mar tonight and was invited to the CD Everton Chairman's restaurant in Valparaiso. Apparently he's promised to show the shirt (if not actaully wear it!) at the concert. (11/04/04)

Everton 4 Santiago Wanderers 1

Everton trounced their arch-rivals from Valparaiso in Sunday's hastily arranged clash. This will have done the team's morale the world of good as they look to find their feet in the top flight. Next fixture: Home to Cobreloa. (01/04/04)

Santiago 0 Everton 0

Everton came away from La Florida stadium in Santiago a little disappointed after taking only one point from a game they had completely dominated (must be an Everton thing - the disappointment, I mean).

This leaves the Ruleteros in 12th place in the league with 11 points from 8 games. Next game at home to high flying Cobreloa.

AGM: Just a reminder that the Society's AGM will be held on Saturday 27th March, 11:00 at the Leigh Arms (upstairs bar).

Leicester: Good to see so many Ruleteros at the Walker Stadium. I don't know who was more heroic - Paul Preston for making it there (after a long lay- off due to his 'op) or Colm Cavanagh for getting home to County Wicklow, through wind and rain.

Everton 2 La Serena 0

After 5 games, Everton recorded their second victory of the campaign on Saturday night against La Serena, who accompanied them to the top flight last season. The 2-0 victory was comfortable enough, but failed to eradicate the humiliation experienced last week against Palestino.

The results so far are:

Puerto Montt 3 2 Everton
Everton 0 1 San Felipe
Huachipato 2 4 Everton
Palestino 4 0 Everton

The Ruleteros now lie 12th in the division. Next game, Tuesday 9th March 21:00 (24:00 GMT) v Universidad de Chile in the National Stadium, Santiago. (07/03/04)

CD Everton 4 Huachipato 2

After a depressing start to the season (two games played, two defeats) Everton bounced back this evening, picking up their first three points of the campaign with a 4-2 victory over Huachipato - despite trailing by two goals and then having a man sent-off. John Shearon (22/02/04)

Next game: Palestino (Santiago) away.
