Well after the all the rumours about who was fit and who wasn’t it was great to see a decent 11 on the pitch. We had Seamus at right back with Hibbo and Slyvain in the middle with Bainsey on the left. Jo was again up front on his own supported by a five man in the middle. Peanuts, Fella, Billy, Dan and Tim

In atrocious conditions the Toffemen got off to the best possible start. With just three minutes gone Tim flicked on a header to Jo who held up the ball brilliantly waiting for support. It came from Billy. He moved into the left hand side of the box and was given a great ball into his path by Jo , Billy steadied himself and duly hit it into the roof of the net. It looked like Sheedy’s finish in the final of the ECWC Final against Rapid. I just prey that he will become a great like Shodders. I think he has got the talent to be.

Everton were dealt two with what looked like serious injury problems. First it was Super Dan who had to come off with a knee injury. The wasn’t anyone near him when he went down. I just hope it’s not one of those medial ligament thingys. Jose Baxter came on as a direct replacement.

The next to go down was Distin who went down with a hamstring problem. Slyvain was only just passed before the game but it was clear he was not fit.Young Irishman Duffy came on in his place. It just not happening for us on the injury front. Are we cursed?

For the rest of the half we were very comfortable with the defence not troubled too much and Tim just dealing with a few long shots . Peanuts again the main man, well backed up by the rest of the team. Fella was playing in a deep defensive role with Peanuts further forward. Both looking very good. Tim was the one always supporting Jo.

Half Time AEK 0 Everton 1

AEK were a bit more of a threat in the second half but it still took them nearly 60 minutes to go close to a leveller when the funny looking number three shot that beat Tim but thankfully shaved the post for a goal kick.

Jo, the boy from Breeze Hill, was having a decent game and nearly got the second we deserved but their goalie made a very good save. We didn’t get the corner either.

We had a bit of a scare when they broke clear on the left but Jose Baxter tracking back made a tremendous clearance off the line. Well done that boy

We were a little bit under the cosh in the latter stages but we were always dangerous on the break, Fella should have scored when he was put clear by Peanuts but his chip sailed over the bar.

It was a real battling performance from the Toffeemen and the victory was something that we certainly deserved especially after all the shite we have through lately. It was great to hear we are now in the knockout stage after Bate were beaten by Benfica. We now get the chance to have more great European nights trips.

There was some really good individual performances none better than Steven Pienaar. He was superb and by a distance the best man on the pitch. Tim Cahill was better than he has been for many weeks. Fella gave everything. Billy was impressive. Hibbo and Bainsey were tremendous. And the youngsters Seamus, Jose and Shane Duffy can be proud of their performance.

All in all this was a massive result in our season and we can now look forward to getting some players back from injury and grabbing some needed points in the Premiership starting with Spurs on Sunday.

Quotes After The Game

Moyesy says: "I am always proud of the players but it was a good result and it gets us through. He (Hibbo) has done great in Europe, he's a 'small' centre-back but he's quick and sharp and knows where to be. Tony Hibbert has been a great player for Everton.

I am pleased with how the young boys who came on and did. It's great experience for them; one or two are maybe stepping up a bit soon but it's needs must at the moment."

Off The Ball

* Top stadium ruined by the fact when you needed the loo, they were bleedin portaloo's, suppose better than hole in the ground aka Ukraine.

* Locked in for half an hour after the game, we all started singing; '...and we love our Neville Southall......, top night, get in there.

* Thought you might want to put this on the site ahead of the AEK game. It's a little souvenir I picked up from Greece a few years ago Great site! COYBB Best wishes David Malone (02/12/09)

Everton Team News

Its the normal type of pre match news the Blues have been used to this season. Sylvian Distin is the latest casualty in the Blues war room, when he went down with a hamstring injury on his travels to Athens. Add to that Joey Yobo, Jonny Boy and Lucas Neill all being out for various reasons, and the Blues back four especially will have a very young look to it. We are in the middle of our worst run since Johnny Vegas trotted up the Benidorm sea front, and good news is very scarce if you are a Blue of late. As ever though, whoever Moyesy sends out know they will have a job to do, or a European sojourn after Christmas will be highly unlikely after our bright start in the Group back in September.

Hibbo will have to sit in at centre half, who with, I really don't know, as Phil Neville is still a week or two away from reappearing in a Blues shirt. Jack the Lad will have a late fitness test, and if anywhere near fit, will want to and have to start for the patched up Blues. Danny G Laa, Seamus Coleman are both likely to start at the back. The midfield though does have a solid look about it with Nuts, Screech (who had his best game in a while against the shite), Billy and Tiny all able to start. King Louis is a slight doubt also, and Moyesy may go for Jo, who also acquitted himself very well in the defeat to the crap.

So here is some of the permuatations then; if the Blues win qualification is in our own hands. Borisov face Benfica tonight, and if Benfica win, and we also win, we go through to the knockout stages. If we draw tonight and beat Borisov in a fortnight, we will go through. The name of the game tonight is not to lose, and hope Benfica do us a favour against Borisov in short. It does get complicated after that, but I can't be arsed going into it, just don't get beat lads !!

Moyesy says: "I am really looking forward to playing here. I think the stadium is fabulous and it is a great opportunity for our players. We have enjoyed playing in some wonderful places this season and this is another one. We are going to have a look at the pitch but it has been quite well documented that the surface isn't the best. I'm going to go and have a look at it after this press conference.

We have watched AEK and their performances since we played them. We know the players - they may well change but we can't do anything about that. We can only worry about our tactics and do our best to win.

Jack Rodwell I think is a doubt for the match. Louis Saha, we hope to have available, he should be with the squad."

Tim says: "People always talk about starting points and turning points and that is what we need now. We just need one win to kick-start it all. That could come in this game. We are looking for a half-decent performance but the result is what really matters to put us through to the next stage. Football is funny. Just one win can make a massive difference. It gets you buzzing again for the next week. Yes, that is just how quick it can all change. Wins create confidence and that is all we are lacking at the moment. One win and I am sure we can then string a few performances together." (02/12/09)

About The Opposition

Since WE WELLIED Athens 4-0 at Goodison, things themselves have been up and down for the Greek giants. They currently lie sixth in their Domestic Championship, a whopping twelve point behind leaders Olympiakos. In saying that they beat third placed PAOK 1-0 at home at the weekend. They have also beaten Everton's opponents from a few years ago Larissa 3-0, back in early November, and are unbeaten in the last three at home.

Their record in the League this season at the Olympic Stadium is a good one, with four wins and two defeats, they also beat Benfica 1-0 back in early October in our Europa League Group.

A Tough task lies ahead for us. COYB FTRS
