Everton youth were rewarded with a home tie against Norwich at Goodison Park next month, after a 3-1 win over Burnley at Accrington Stanley’s Fraser Eagle Stadium last night. With it all square at half-time, Everton went into a 3-0 lead with goals from Lewis Codling, Jack Rodwell and Tom McCready ensured Everton Youth team progressed to the fifth round of the FA Youth Cup.

Coach Neil Dewsnip says: “We were quite pleased with the first half that, although we know we could do better, we expected Burnley to come at us strongly and they did and we were happy to level at half-time. That was the game-plan to be nice and steady and to go for it in the second half and it worked out exactly. It doesn’t always go like that but it did tonight.

I just thought we had a little bit more quality at times than they did and that was the difference. It was great to advance and great for the lads to get another go at Goodison Park. We don’t know too much about Norwich, because they are at the other end of the country. But they have won the last two games and they will be a threat. But we will do our homework and anybody on Goodison is a great tie to look forward to.” (15/01/09)

Akpan Signs Professional

Hope Akpan has become the fourth Academy graduate to sign on with Everton in the past month. The 17-year-old, who recently made the step up from the U-18s to the Reserves, joins James McCarten, Nathan Craig and Lewis Codling in signing professional terms as the Blues secure what some say is a potentially impressive crop of youngsters.

Lewis Codling has signed a professional contract with Everton. The 17-year old forward was a pivotal player in Everton’s under 18 squad last season and was also promoted to Andy Holden’s reserve team towards the end of last season.

Lewis says: "I feel good. I am relieved. It's a confidence boost and hopefully I can kick on now. It is a good day for me and my family. This season hasn't been the best for me so far, I have got to start scoring more goals. Hopefully I can push into the reserves this season. I'd like to be a regular and score some goals."
